How We Got Started Biography of Valerie Wood
Valerie Wood, President and Owner of Energy Solutions, Inc. has more than 24 years of experience in the natural gas industry. Prior to forming Energy Solutions, Inc. Valerie worked in customer-service and natural gas-buying positions for three regulated utilities and two deregulated natural gas marketers. In 1996, Valerie sought a career change, so she did something quite simple -- she asked businesses (the customer) what is was they felt they were missing when it came to the natural gas industry. The unanimous response was “unbiased information," and that is foundation upon which Energy Solutions, Inc. was formed.
In the fall of 1996, Energy Solutions, Inc. found its niche by educating businesses on how they could save money by participating in the choices available to them through the deregulated natural gas market. Through a combination of publications and education seminars, Energy Solutions, Inc. taught businesses about the in's and out's of selecting a natural gas supplier and how to evaluate what choices were best for their company.
Between 1996 and 2000, the price of the natural gas commodity doubled, and the services of Energy Solutions, Inc. evolved also, as seminar topics were expanded to include how to evaluate the natural gas market for buying opportunities, how to establish a budget, and how to negotiate new elements of the marketplace, such as the cost of pipeline transportation, known more commonly as pipeline basis.
But before long, customers were faced with even greater challenges as prices become even more volatile and at the same time many organizations were reducing internal staff. As one individual stated, "I understand the market, and I know how to do it, but I no longer have the time to do it." As a result, since the start of the decade, Energy Solutions, Inc. added the provision of one-on-one buying advisory services into its portfolio of services -- all of which are designed to help the natural gas business user.
As the industry has evolved, so has our publication, The Advisor. Today, monthly editions are supplemented with weekly editions and special alerts to ensure that readers are kept fully informed of pricing changes and buying opportunities.
Our seminars and workshops continue to address a variety of topics and range in length from three-hours for the more advanced buyer to 1-1/2 days for those that are relatively new to the task of buying natural gas for their company.
Overall, the foundation upon which Energy Solutions, Inc. was formed has not changed -- it is still to provide unbiased information to businesses to assist them with their natural gas buying decisions. And, we continue to accomplish this goal through The Advisor, education seminars and workshops, and one-on-one buying advice or consulting.
