About the NYMEX Natural Gas Contract

The natural gas futures contract, traded on the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX) is widely used throughout the nation as the benchmark for the price of the natural gas commodity.

A single futures contract equals 10,000 MMBtus, however, businesses don't have to purchase an entire contract when desiring to secure their price of natural gas into the future.

At this time, the NYMEX provides forward pricing for natural gas futures contracts through December 2022.   Open outcry trading is conducted from 9:00 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. EST and electronic trading is conducted from 6:00 p.m. until 5:15 p.m. via the CME Globex® trading platform, Sunday through Friday. There is a 45-minute break each day between 5:15PM (current trade date) and 6:00 PM (next trade date).

The price of each monthly natural gas NYMEX contract is based on delivery to the Henry Hub in Louisiana.  This location is the nexus of 16 intra- and interstate natural gas pipelines.  The cost of the NYMEX commodity, priced at the Henry Hub, accounts for the majority of a business' natural gas expenditures.

A second cost component is the cost of interstate pipeline transportation or "basis" which represents the cost differential between the cost of the NYMEX contract at the Henry Hub and a business' geographic location.  Basis prices can be positive or negative depending on whether your business is located.
